To deepen our ability to engage in key policy battles ahead, GGJ is hiring a new Policy Director position to lead the creation, implementation and operationalization of GGJ’s policy and civic engagement goals, to advance our campaign work toward building an anti-racist feminist regenerative economy at all levels of government (local, State, and federal).

Flexible Location within the United States: GGJ’s team has worked remotely for 15 years. During COVID-19 travel restrictions, all of our programming and organizing work is happening remotely/online. Once travel is not deemed a public health risk and restrictions are lifted, travel will be required for this position on average 5-10 days per month in the US, and 15 days per year internationally. While the position is remote, employee must be based in the United States. 

Compensation: $70,000-$73,000. This position is full-time with potential for long term based on evaluation after a 3 month introductory period.  Benefits including health, dental, vision and life insurance begin on the first month after date of hire, and includes generous vacation.

Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) is an alliance of over 65 member organizations.  

Position Summary:  The Policy Director will lead the creation, implementation and operationalization of GGJ’s policy and civic engagement goals, to advance our campaign work toward building an anti-racist, feminist, regenerative economy at all levels of government (local, State, and federal).  The position requires significant experience with policymaking, analysis, and strategic policy advocacy campaigns, the ability to develop intersectional strategy, and a commitment to environmental, racial, gender, and economic justice. Applicants must have a strong ability to build relationships with integrity and humility, work independently, forecast and plan multiple projects several months in advance, attention to detail as well as big picture political analysis, and consistent communication while working remotely. This new position will partner closely with GGJ’s Organizing Team to develop and implement an integrated power-building strategy for systemic change through policy interventions that are accountable to and aligned with grassroots organizing. The Policy Director will report to the GGJ Organizing Director.

Responsibilities include:

1. Lead GGJ’s policy development (Approx. 40% FTE) 

  • Serve as GGJ’s primary policy and political strategist and expert, working closely with the Organizing and Political Directors to identify opportunities to further GGJ’s strategic objectives. 
  • Guide development of strategic activities to advance policy goals, including developing reports;  identifying needed research; power mapping, and helping to identify and address key targets. 
  • Direct and conduct policy analyses of regulatory and legislative proposals, and develop strategy,  as necessary.
  • Partner with the Organizing Director to leverage connections across different programs, including intersecting projects, campaigns, and policies, to align program priorities with overall organizational goals and mission.
  • Provide high-level strategic advice to the Executive Director, Organizing Team, and Coordinating Committee on political developments including long-term strategy, growth, and opportunities for policy interventions.

2. Represent GGJ externally in policy related relationships  (Approx. 30% FTE) 

  • Representing GGJ, advocate before local, state, and national legislature, executive branch, and regulatory agencies, as necessary.
  • Represent GGJ externally and further relationships with a variety of decision makers and  stakeholders including, but not limited to, elected officials, unions, environmental, social  justice, and feminist organizations, funders, media, and key political tables.
  • Participate in meetings and networks to advance policy and civic engagement goals.

3. Campaign Development and Member Engagement (Approx. 20% FTE) 

  • Work closely with the Organizing Team to support campaign planning and strategy across three core organizing priorities: grassroots feminism, green new deal/ just transition, and anti-militarism.
  • Engage in member leadership spaces including the coordinating committee and work group meetings that guide decisions around political strategy, organizing and field program development. 
  • Support the Organizing Team’s long-term strategic planning on how GGJ and our members can use political and civic engagement to build an anti-racist, feminist, regenerative economy.

4. Participate in GGJ team (10%)

  • Utilize GGJ tech platforms to ensure flow of information and completion of tasks, accuracy of  records (including contact records in Powerbase), reporting requirements are met, and usage of systems that support the operations team of GGJ.
  • Maintain and manage personal and GGJ’s main calendar in coordination with project calendars to support the coordination of organization-wide operations.
  • Active and timely response on all communications (email, phone, texts, messaging apps)
    Attend weekly virtual meetings with staff, members and allies.
  • Participate in and support preparation for quarterly in-person staff meetings, annual Coordinating Committee meetings, and other events as necessary.
  • Compliance with GGJ remote working policies and procedures (calendaring, availability online, response time to communications, receipts, etc.)

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 6-8 years’ successful experience in grassroots policymaking, advocating through the legislative process, aligned with grassroots organizing strategy development.
  • Strong research and written communication skills, including the ability to write both quickly and compellingly.   
    Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to engage with diverse  audiences.
    Excellent understanding and analysis of political moment and national political landscape and relation to community-based and advocacy groups.
  • Significant experience in building grassroots and political power through base-building, civic  engagement, and movement building.
  • Familiarity with some Left frameworks such as feminist economy, climate policy, transformative justice, and global justice issues, as well as concepts pertaining to self-determination, liberation, decolonization, internationalism, political economy, and popular social movements.
  • Ability to work remotely, manage multiple work tasks, maintain attention to detail and accuracy,  and meet the pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
    Flexibility and positive attitude, solution-oriented and ability to move forward.
  • Effective strategic planning, program evaluation and project management skills.
  • Ability to support a team-oriented environment; commitment to democratic participation. 
  • Demonstrated experience working within coalitions.
    Willingness to travel (when permissible according to COVID-19 travel restrictions): average 5-10 days per month in the US, and 15 days per year internationally.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends), including communicating with allies in other parts of the world in different time zones.
  • Driver’s license and liability insurance.

Preferred Experience

  • Ability to read, write and speak other languages besides English, preferably Spanish or Portuguese.
  • Background in key federal policies and initiatives including, but not limited to, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Civil Rights Act, Compensation and Liability Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and Executive Order 12898 – Environmental Justice, the THRIVE Agenda, the BREATHE Act, the National Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, the Global Peace-building Act (HR 5948).
  • Existing relationships within the racial, gender, climate justice and larger social  movement community.
  • Existing relationships with elected officials and staffers at local, State, and federal offices.
